Why Do We Need To Conduct DFM Manufacturability Review Before Customizing High-frequency Boards?

, a DFM manufacturability review should be conducted to bridge the gap between the ideal design state and the actual mass production process, in order to avoid amplifying small process deviations into serious performance failure problems in high-frequency scenarios.

High frequency signals are extremely sensitive to process parameters. Conventional electromagnetic simulations default to perfectly rectangular wiring and absolutely uniform materials, but there are five types of systematic deviations in actual production:

After etching, the wiring becomes trapezoidal, and typical bottom cutting can cause 1-3 Ω impedance shift

The difference in Dk between different batches of the same type of board can reach ± 0.05, causing an additional 1-2 Ω impedance fluctuation

The surface roughness Rz of copper foil is in the range of 1.5-8 μ m, resulting in an additional conductor loss of 0.1-0.5dB per inch

The thickness fluctuation of the medium after pressing the semi cured sheet is ± 0.025mm, resulting in an impedance deviation of 1-2 Ω

Glass weaving effect causes ± 0.5 Ω periodic impedance ripple
After the superposition of five types of deviations, the worst-case difference between the simulated value and the actual impedance of the finished product can reach 5-8 Ω, far exceeding the tolerance requirement of ± 3% 5% for high-frequency boards, directly leading to product failure. The DFM review will import the manufacturer's actual process parameters in advance, narrowing the gap between simulation and actual testing from the design source.

The DFM of ordinary PCBs only focuses on processability, while the DFM of high-frequency boards must cover three core dimensions simultaneously:

Board and laminate review: Confirm that the Dk/Df parameters of Rogers and other high-frequency boards match the target frequency band, verify the symmetry of the laminate to avoid warping after lamination, ensure impedance stability and SMT welding yield

Impedance and transmission line review: Verify whether the impedance tolerance of the design is within the manufacturer's process capability range, confirm that the reference ground plane below the high-frequency wiring is intact without slots, reserve sufficient etching compensation margin, and prevent signal reflection caused by impedance mismatch

Through hole and special process review: Evaluate whether the through hole residual pile needs back drilling treatment, strictly prohibit the use of tin spraying technology for high-frequency boards, and recommend mandatory immersion gold/silver surface treatment to avoid damaging the signal skin effect

Industry test data shows that high-frequency board projects that have completed DFM review:

The average number of PCB revisions has decreased from 2.8 to 1.2, reducing revision costs by 57%

Prevent over 70% of mass production quality issues in advance and avoid mass scrapping of high-frequency and expensive boards

Addressing the high-frequency industry pain point of "sample performance fully meets standards, batch yield drops sharply" from the source, significantly shortening the research and development cycle
